Fun Facts About the Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks covers 61,000 acres and contains 617 billion gallons of fresh water, what the city of St. Louis typically uses over a decade.
  • Roughly 3.5 million tourists visit Lake of the Ozarks from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • At 17,741 acres, Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the largest park in Missouri.
  • The original purpose of Bagnell Dam was to supply electricity to St. Louis.
  • There are rumors of catfish large enough to eat a human lurking at the bottom of the lake. Thankfully, this is just a myth that’s been officially dispelled. Every two years, the Dam gets a full underwater inspection and a few spot inspections here and there.
  • It took 20,000 workers two years to finish building Bagnell Dam.
  • Of all people who own two homes in the Midwest, 40% own one of them at the Lake of the Ozarks.
  • The town of Linn Creek is in its second location - it was moved after construction plans for the Lake of the Ozarks indicated that its original location would be flooded when the dam was completed.
  • There are more than 1,150 miles of shoreline along the Lake of the Ozarks - more than the coast of California!
  • The total cost to build Bagnell Dam was approximately $30 million (nearly $360 million in today's money).

  • Odd trash, like a fake leg, bowling ball, a treadmill, shopping cart, and even a motorcycle.
